This piece was simply a passion project but I explored an inspiration and gave myself an hour to complete it.
One of my favorite songs from Childish Gambino is That Power from his 2011 album Camp. I was looking through fonts when I came across "8" (yes, that's the name of it), and it gave me that summer camp, vintage vibe that screams Childish Gambino. The lyrics, "Got on the bus a boy and I never got off the bus, I still haven't..." are at the end of the song and were what inspired the entire poster. I really wanted to capture this song as a scrapbook memory from his time at camp and what the song is about.
In a lot of Gambino's merchandise and artwork, his team goes for a vintage look, so it was only fitting to create a lot of texture and grunge with the background and some of the images. I also wanted to keep it all black and white because the song highlights memories from childhood, and since I'm capturing it in a scrapbook, I felt it was most fitting. My favorite elements in this piece are the small typography on the back of the bus, where I was able to fit "Childish Gambino" as if it were intentionally the bus branding, and the album name "Camp 2011" on the photo of the camp lodging, like it was written on the photo.
